South Georgia is an island over 1500 miles away from the Antarctic Peninsula. It is the location for two research facilities. The King Edward Point research facility is conducting Applied Fisheries Research on behalf of the Government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands. The Bird Island research facility is conducting population biology, ecosystem dynamics and behavior of seabirds and seals. From their inception both research facilities have been occupied sporadically. However, they are now being manned on a continuous basis. Though most of Antarctica is covered in snow, you may be surprised to actually see green grass grow on the hillsides of this island.

Puerto Deseado is a beautiful city on the Atlantic coast of Santa Cruz and sitting on the northern bank of the Deseado creek. With its deep blue water and endless sea, bays, cliffs and capes Puerto Deseado has become an economically active fishing and tourist location. With its large populations of birds, marine mammals and typical fauna, Santa Crus has opened several natural reservations in Puerto Deseado; including the Deseado creek. Its most known Natural Monument is the "Bosue Petrificado" (Petrified Forest), located to the South west of the Jaramillo station in a depression called Bajo del Guanaco.

Day 15 : Arica / CHILE

The beautiful city of Arica is as lovely as it is diverse.You can lie on the beach sipping an exotic drink, and hike the trails of the glorious Lauca National Park in the same day.The Cathedral of San Marcos is a fantastic man-made achievement, and the Salar de Surire National Monument is spectacular. In addition, the city and its surrounding area are virtually rain free, experiencing the least precipitation of anywhere on earth.It also has an incredibly low crime rate, and is a wonderful blend of modern tourist attractions and ancient culture.

Day 16 : Puerto Madryn / ARGENTINA

Nestled in a protected bay on the Gulf Nuevo, this unique hamlet was founded by adventurous Welsh colonists in 1865 and has maintained Welsh as its official language. Visit the Valdez Peninsula, the only known continental breeding place for elephant seals. Also watch for sea lions, whales and exotic birds.

Perhaps you would enjoy a dinner ashore, followed by a performance of the Tango or an optional excursion into the pampas to visit an estancia (ranch) with traditional gaucho hospitality.
